How to Teach the Dog to Live with the Cat

It is not impossible to teach the dog to live with the cat. Although, if you would ask a dog owner, most likely, the answer will be that the cat and the dog cannot live friendly under one roof. A scene where the dog barks and chases the cat is too common. However, the patient owner can teach the dog to live with the cat. The first law – patience, as it all takes time. Dog’s native instinct of predator is to chase, while the cat – to be cautious and take a defensive posture. However, despite the contrary instincts, there are ways how to make the dog with cat become friends and live together peacefully.

The owner has to take into account the dog’s / cat’s breed, size, sex, age, temperament, and health. Before the introduction the owner has to assess how much harm these “friends” can cause to each other. It should be mentioned that a part of adult dogs who have never seen a cat in their lives do not show any signs of aggression. Cats rarely attack dogs unless they are not scared.

Specialists believe that dog’s and cat’s introduction must be done gradually, which can take up to 1 – 2 months. It is recommended to make an introduction in the puppy years, as then dogs adopt new things better, accumulating the experience for the future life. The puppy will quickly adopt a cat as a family member, but take into account that the cat, which has been a part of your family for long time, may have a different opinion about the arrival of new pet in its territory. It should be mentioned that the cat who has not been persecuted by the dog will be easier to introduce the dog, as the previous experience will not interfere.

Before the important meeting, make sure that your cat’s sharp nails are cut to avoid unexpected injuries. In turn, the dog should be able to perform the most important commands such as “sit” and “stay”, which give the owner more control. The owner should also think about tasty snacks for both friends. It is important that the first meeting of dog and cat would be monitored and controlled.

At first, the new inmate of the house should have their own place at home where the constantly living dog or cat would not have free access. Make sure that your new dog or cat can freely and undisturbedly walk all the rooms and get acquainted with the new scent. Let the permanent dweller to get acquainted with the new scent and see how it reacts. It is important to introduce them with other’s smell before the meeting, using a toy, collar, or sleeping mat.

Then gradually – at the beginning open the door for 30 seconds where the new dog or cat resides, allowing the other to look into the room and smell the air through the opened door slot. Reward both of your pets with a healthy treat for good behaviour. If the dog or the cat is worried after the first meeting, try to involve it in some other activity – play with it or take it to a walk. The dog or the cat will lose interest in the new inmate. With each day, open the door more and more widely, and let the dog or the cat to look in the room for longer time where the new inmate is staying.

It is better if your new dog or cat stays in special room where it cannot be freely accessed. If opening the door the dog respects the cat, go to the adjoining room and call your dog by getting it in the game or any other activity. Do not be afraid if the dog wants to sniff the cat – you should even encourage the dog to do it. Remember that the dog feels owner’s anxiety, so be calm and quiet.

Remember that the first meeting should last as long as the dog and the cat feel comfortable. That is why owner’s patience is so important. Regularly repeating this introducing procedure, you will be able to leave the door opened more and more. Later you will be able to leave it opened all the time to be able to control the situation. Some of dog and cat owners will have to accept that their new friends will not be able to be left together unattended. Others will realize that after a few months of introduction both of their pets are get used to each other’s presence. Finally, remember that a dog and a cat will never be best friends, but you can try to teach them to put up with each other’s presence.

Allergy to Animals

Around 15% of people are allergic to animal skin and excretions. Particularly young people suffer from this allergy. The first signs of allergy usually appear in about a month since the animal’s arrival at home.

Manifestations of allergy often are clearly visible – as soon as the animal gets in the lap or lies down next to the human, the sneezing and watery eyes appear. The second option – the animal licks the hand, and the allergic urticaria – sudden itching and rushes – appears on that place. In rare cases, the atopic dermatitis is found. Signs of atopic dermatitis are red, itchy, long lasting patches and rough, itchy skin.

It should be taken into account that such reactions may appear without direct contact with animals, as people can carry animal’s hair with their clothes, including caked saliva, sweat, and skin particles. Rural children are less affected, as they come in contact with animals quite often. Their immunity is more stable from the early age.

The believe that shorthair dogs are less allergenic because they molt less is wrong. Several dog breeds, for example, pugs, boxers, and Dalmatians change their hair almost year round. Also golden retrievers change their beautiful, curly wool quite intensively. There are not a lot of cat breeds with really long wool. Allergic people should be wary of the Persian cats, but for sensitive people also the British Shorthair can cause problems. The believe that bald animals do not cause allergies is mistaken as well – even Chinese Crested, Mexican Hairless, Don, and Canadian Sphinx can cause allergy.

In case of allergy:

  • When there are minor allergic reactions to animal fur, it is not recommended to buy an animal. If you already have one, try to prevent contact with the allergen;
  • For allergic children it is not advisable to stay near the wildlife corner in kindergarten;
  • It is not recommended to go to the circus performances, as there are a lot of different animals in a closed room;
  • If you are allergic to horse hair, in no case stay in the stable;
  • When going to visit people who have a pet, take the necessary medicine;
  • One of the possibilities to reduce the allergy is to comb and wash the animal more frequently.

How to reduce allergies to animals?

  • Do not allow the animal to stay in the living room or in the bedroom;
  • Regularly clean the house with a vacuum cleaner and wash the floor as well as use good air purifiers;
  • Wash your pet at least once a week and comb it daily;
  • Do not allow the animal to freely move through the car – use the transport box;
  • Wash your hands after contact with animals and their toys;
  • Visit some allergist and discuss about possible therapy.

How to Choose a Dog?

Family who has no experience in raising dogs, especially families with small children and a lack of time has to choose a small or medium-sized, calm and friendly dog. There are a lot of dog breeds that, although widely popular, are not suitable for beginners, for example, breeds that were originally created as guard dogs or fighting dogs. Look for opportunities to personally contact dogs of chosen breed and talk to the breeders and owners of these dogs. Remember that beautiful picture books about dog breeds often include only positive features of each dog breed.

How to choose a dog breed

The original function of breed
It will tell you a lot about the dog’s nature and characteristics. Beagles like to bark – it is in their genes for many generations. For wind dogs the race with the wind can be more important than the command “Come!”. For housedogs it can be difficult to accept the loud friends of your teen son, who are used to loudly and happily fall in your apartment at any time of the day. If you have decorative rats and hamsters, do not choose any of terrier breeds – they have completely different views on what these small rodents are meant for. An active bird dog will have difficulties with living in a small apartment and sedentary lifestyle, while dogs of small breeds will feel good in such circumstances. Dog breeds should be evaluated according to how well they fit into particular circumstances of life, what you can offer, and how suitable is this dog for the role that you are intended.

The size
Consider whether your residence is suitable for a large dog, and whether you will be able to provide a normal, active dog’s life, and freedom of movement to a large dog. Will it have enough space in your house, apartment, in the yard, and in the car? If you have planned that the dog will take a walk mainly with your children, think about how much the dog weighs, and whether your children will be able to physically hold the dog.

The amount of plumage
All dogs are shedding, except those who do not have the hair. There are some breeds that are shedding a little bit, but their require a regular professional grooming, for example, poodles. Dogs with shorter plumage will be easier to care, and they bring less mud in the house.

The level of activity
The higher is dog’s activity level, the more owner’s time and attention it requires. Lazy dogs will put up with conditions to sit quietly in the apartment while owners are at work, but for active dogs it can be very difficult to stand the boredom and loneliness. Active dogs can make a noise and cause damages to your furnitures and things. For people who have an active lifestyle and who can take the dog with them an active dog is a great choice.

The health
Many dog breeds, especially popular ones, have inherited diseases. Find out what diseases threaten your chosen breed and what does the breeder has done to reduce the risk of hereditary disease inheritance in its breeding animals and puppies.

Parental participation in the puppy’s upbringing
You should not buy a dog only for your children. You have to take into account that children’s interests can change and all the promises can vanish. During dog’s life, which is about 10 – 15 years, a lot can change, therefore buy a dog only if some of adults will be happy to take care of the dog if necessary.

Year of the Dog

Years: 1910, 1922, 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994, 2006, 2018 and so on.

Those who are born in the year of the Dog are always restless, always on guard and never does not rest – they are always vigilant.

They often become cynical, and people are often afraid of them because of their harsh and unpleasant remarks. Dogs have tendency to get carried away with the little things, to criticize reasonably and unreasonably, and to find the reason for the termination of communication. Dogs are very shy, and they do not like neither to confess nor to hear others confessions.

They talk quite simple, and sometimes it is difficult for them to express their thoughts. Dogs have deep mind, and they can listen like no one else can. People can trust them, and it is completely right – they are doing their best, and sometimes their trust is adjoining with self-sacrifice. People respect them deservedly.

Fighters for justice are almost always born under the sign of Dog. Any injustice causes a protest in Dogs, and they do not calm down till they have not done utmost to improve the situation. Dogs worry about the hunger on earth as well as worry because of past, present, and everything that can happen. Fortunately, they are rarely defending foolishnesses. Dogs are philosophers, moralists, and they are not interested in money.

They are magnanimous and altruistic. Regardless of whether they live on the street or in luxury, in their essence they are intellectuals, and they can get along without the material comforts. If they will need the money, they will be able to get it themselves better than others.

Dogs are good leaders in different industries, they are active social workers, priests, and teachers. In any field of work they will be perfectly honest. They can perfectly manage people because no one else has such a great ability to work and the honesty.

Also in love life they are honest and reasonable. Dogs will have love difficulties throughout life, which will be caused by fickleness and restless. Three stages of Dogs life will pass under the sign of volatility. Restless childhood, difficult youth, maturity years with scepticism and sense of defeat, and ageing with regrets about undone things. Dogs that are born during the day are very calm, compared to dogs that are born during the night.

Dog Training

Right from the first day that your dog spends in the family, it demands an attention and education just like a child. If you do not want to become your dog’s slave but a reputable owner and good friend, you should know the first steps in dog training.

Long-term investment

The owner of puppy has to put behaviour basics that are adapted to the owner’s rhythm of life. Remember that puppy should not change and determine its owner’s habits! Although the puppy training takes time, patience, and strictness, every dog owner has to understand that it is a long-term investment in its relationships with the animal in the future.

If it is the first dog that you own or you do not have enough practice in training of animal, it is recommended to involve an instructor, but in order to teach behaviour basics, the instructor can be replaced with the experienced dog breeder.

When the dog is six months old, and it has acquired basic commands, you can start more serious dressage, at this time using services of professional trainers. If it is possible, starting from the four months of age, you can take your dog to the training courts and participate in training of obedience. It is not serious but very valuable experience because it provides an opportunity of socialization. There your dog can learn to get along with other brothers of its species, and you can see how they learn commands, facilitating your learning process.

The first most important commands

  • Command “Sit”:
    As experience shows, this is one of the easiest commands to teach, therefore it is best to start the training with this command.
  • Command “Come”:
    This command usually helps to keep a dog out of some trouble, bringing it back to you if you, for example, accidentally leave the front door open or lose a grip;
  • Command “Down”:
    This command may seem simple, but actually it can be one of the most difficult commands in dog training because the position of this command is a submissive posture. You can help by keeping training relaxed and positive, especially if your dog is fearful or anxious.
  • Command “Stay”:
    Before you start to teach this command, make sure that your dog is an expert at the “Sit” command, as they are quite similar.
  • Command “Leave it”:
    This command can help to keep your dog safe in different situations, for example, when it smells something tempting but possibly dangerous on the ground.

Dog Food

Dog food, just like cat food, is a food, which is specially applied for dog feeding, and it contains all the necessary vitamins, amino acids, and fats, and gives your dog an energy for all day. Dog food, which is commercially sold in stores, comes in many different versions, and there is different food produced for each dog breed, but taking into account that dogs are carnivores, they need meat or meat products. As dogs have sharp teeth, they need solid food as well – it is necessary for training of their teeth and for their joy and health.

Calories

Dogs, just like people, have different physical conditions, and these conditions determine the necessary amount of calories per day or the necessary amount of energy. The amount of calories depends on dog’s size, breed, age as well as location and season. The average amount of calories, which has to be taken in with food, is 40 – 100 calories per day. If we take an average 70, we can look at the schedule, which includes dog’s weight and the necessary amount of calories per day.

As we can see in this schedule, dogs have greater necessity of energy per kilogram than people, that is why it often seems that our dogs eat much more than we because they actually eat.

Dry food

Dry food, as we all know, is cheaper and it is easy to use, but it contains just 5% – 10% of water, which means that we have to give our pets a lot of additional water. Dry food also contains less vitamins and other substances that our dogs need, therefore we have to give them absent vitamins and other supplements. Dry food is relatively cheap and convenient, and that is why it dominates in the market of dog food, becoming the leader of this market.

Wet food

Wet food contains much more vitamins and minerals, and the majority of dogs prefer this food, not dry food. Giving your dog wet food, you give it a food that resembles meat, which it instinctively searches and eats. Wet food is easier to keep than meat, and it is also much cheaper than fresh meat, which also have to be given to your dog time by time. Wet food is cheaper than natural products, but it is still more expensive than dry food, and that is why it is less common than dry food.

Treats

Dog treats or bone-like snacks are made so that the dog is able to train its teeth and clean its gums, receiving some calories at the same time. Treats are not meant for daily use – it has to be like a gift, which you give to your dog in some special events, but these events have to be regular.
